RIO+ Talk on migrant workers

The next RIO+ Talk will feature a lecture by Professor Marius Olivier as a joint initiative between the UNDP RIO+ Centre and Caritas. Marius Olivier is the director of the South Africa’s Institute for Social Law and Policy, and holds adjunct professorial positions at the Northwest University South Africa and University of Western Australia. He has been specializing in the area of migration, but also its relation with social protection, social security and labor law, in particular in the African context. Marius has led a large number of projects in the social protection and migration domains and has organized several consultative workshops and seminars on migration-related themes. He is author and co-author of several recent publications, papers and reports on migration and social protection. He will present first-hand the findings of his research in Brazil.

A Brazilian  perspective on labor and social protection will be exposed by a representative of the Program for Assistance to Refugees and Refugee Seekers from Cáritas Rio de Janeiro, and will be enriched by the mediation of  the Center on Law and Migration Policies and Refugee (CEDPIR) of the Casa de Rui Barbosa Foundation.

The RIO+ Talks is a series of lectures and debates to encourage public debate on pathways to sustainable development, hosted by  the UNDP World Centre for Sustainable Development (RIO+ Centre), this event aims at bring together a mixed audience composed of academic students, migrant workers and asylum seekers; local organizations, activists and NGOs; and the local media.

Caritas Brazil is an entity of the Brazilian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CNBB). It was founded in 1956 as a non-profit organisation. It has more than 15,000 workers – most of them volunteers – operating in 170 cities throughout the country. Caritas Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo are the main reference of support to refugees and vulnerable foreign migrant workers who arrive in Brazil. Caritas Rio and Sao Paulo coordinate the largest support network for refugees in Latin America, with almost 100 local organizations involved.
