RIO+ Centre’s Team Member Releases New Book on Sustainability

To achieve the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) new approaches are needed, particularly those approaches that engage individuals and bring the goals into everyday lives. A new book recently written and published by one of the RIO+ Centre’s own team members, Rosaly Byrd (Programme Associate at the RIO+ Centre), has captured this, highlighting that individuals are key to the transformation our society must undergo to become more sustainable.

In what began as writing blog posts related to environmental policy and sustainable development on both her own site, The Sustainability Co-Op, as well as the Huffington Post, Rosaly and her co-author were approached by Rowman & Littlefield publishers late 2015 to write a book on individual’s role in sustainability. A year and a half later, Rosaly’s first book Sustainability Made Simple: Small Changes for Big Impact has been published and released.

Designed for those who would like to learn more about sustainability yet recognizing that the topic can seem overwhelming and complex, Sustainability Made Simple walks readers through small, actionable steps anyone can take to reduce the environmental impact in their routine, bringing the SDGs into readers’ homes. Although big environmental concerns may often seem obscure and not related to our daily lives, Sustainability Made Simple demonstrates that in fact our own actions do affect the environment, which in turn impacts our lives.  The book, which touches on global issues such as deforestation, climate change and water and air pollution– all of which are challenges the SDGs seek to address, guides individuals in making easy changes to minimize their contribution to these global environmental challenges. By sharing inspiring stories already being taken by regular people, Sustainability Made Simple also points out that sustainability is not about giving things up, but rather about making our lives, communities, and society better.

“Individuals are integral to the structural changes needed to move toward a sustainable society”—Sustainability Made Simple

The book was published in March 2017 and the authors plan on hosting “Sustainability” events around the world. The RIO+ Centre will also promote a workshop with the authors in Rio de Janeiro as part of the RIO+ Talks series.
