The OWG ́s conclusions will be one of the fundamental contributions to be considered by the UN General Assembly as part of the broader post-2015 development agenda that world leaders are expected to adopt at a Summit in September 2015
The World Centre for Sustainable Development (RIO+ Centre) is delighted to present a non-official translation into Portuguese of the outcome of the Open Working Group (OWG) on Sustainable Development Goals. It was forwarded to the UN General Assembly on July 22nd.
As Portuguese is not one of the six official and working languages of the United Nations, the RIO+ Centre has commissioned this translation so that it can help Portuguese speakers to better follow the negotiations related to the post-2015 development agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).
A result of 17 months of negotiations involving representatives from 70 countries, the OWG document embraces the economic, environmental and social dimensions of sustainable development. It is one of the three inputs the UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, will use to prepare his synthesis report on the Sustainable Development Goals, which will replace the Millenium Development Goals (MDG) from 2016 onwards. The other two inputs are the documents of the High Level Panel of Eminent Persons on the Post-2015 Development Agenda created by the Secretary General on July 2012 and a group on the financing on development issues.
The proposal contains 17 goals with 169 targets covering a broad range of sustainable development issues, including ending poverty and hunger, improving health and education, making cities more sustainable, combating climate change, and protecting oceans and forests. It will be considered by the General Assembly as part of the broader post-2015 development agenda that world leaders are expected to adopt at a Summit in September 2015.
The agreement by UN Member States to launch a process to develop a set of sustainable development goals (SDGs) was one of the main outcomes of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012. The Open Working Group was established on 22nd of January 2013 by decision of the General Assembly and had the active involvement of civil society.
The Centre would like to thank the General Coordination for Sustainable Development (CGDES) of the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its suggestions to the text of this Portuguese version.
